PRP treatment, platelet rich plasma therapy

PRP treatment or Platelet Rich Plasma is an autologous biological element, which means that it comes from our own human body. It is extracted from the patient’s own blood so that there is no rejection whatsoever.

The extraction is subjected later to certain mechanical procedures such as centrifugation to separate its different components that present in blood, this way we can extract the fraction we need which is the plasma rich in growth factors (responsible for blood coagulation), this factors help to regenerate many parts of the body.

This type of therapy has two main medical uses:

  • Treatments with curative or palliative purposes.
  • Treatments with esthetical purposes.

Platelet-Rich Plasma is used mainly to fix injured tissues related with muscles and joints and within these ones ligaments and tendons are included. PRP stimulates the regeneration in local damaged areas with positive results for the patient.

When this technique is used for curative purposes, it shows very good results in wound scaring, burns healings and even in anal fissures. It’s used in aesthetic medicine as a prior treatment for the application of scientific proven cosmetic cream. It is very used for the sunburn lesions as a preventive treatment to avoid skin cancer, melanoma and other skin disease.

A proper treatment using Platelet-Rich Plasma has direct effects on the skin giving it greater elasticity, hydration and brightness, slowing down the aging process on it. In recent years, these advantages have made that aesthetic medicine include this therapy since it improves our skin remarkably, reduces wrinkles and expression lines.

Since this therapy is autologous, as mentioned above, there is not any side-effect or immune reaction so it can be applied to anyone. This treatment is recommendable in patients older than 40 years-old.

This therapy is very used for recovery and regeneration of sport lesions. For Sports people and athletes, Platelet-Rich Plasma or PRP is essential because among other reasons, it speeds up recovery and can restore practically full movement.

It applies to treat ankle and ligament sprains, tendonitis, cruciate ligament injury (usual in footballers), muscle tears, back and neck injuries, tennis elbow (not only for tennis practitioners but also for those who practice paddle, badminton and similar), pain, instability of the pelvis and chronic plantar fasciitis.

All these lesions are the most common ones though there are other cases in which PRP is indicated such as rheumatic and arthritic diseases.

This procedure is carried out in a specialized clinic like Biomedic Clinic. After the extraction and centrifugation, we proceed to infiltrate directly to the area to be treated, and sessions are repeated depending on the case.

Before infiltration, we proceed to apply an anaesthesia cream locally because it produces localized pain that depending on the patient’s tolerance it can be high in certain cases. A few micro-punctions (with a very fine needle) are performed the same way it’s done in mesotherapy.

If you have an illness and want us to study your case, fill out our medical form with a brief explanation of your case.

Frequency of application and when we can expect results

The frequency depends on each case but in general terms, we can do one session every 21 days between 6 to 12 months and then the second year we can apply one session in a longer period of time according to the results achieved. As you can see, this is an on-going program to stimulate the regenerative process of the body in the long run.

The results cannot be achieved in short-term, and they will depend on the damage of tissue to be treated and the patient’s age since our regenerative ability decreases through time. After 40 days of treatment we can expect certain benefits and wellness in the affected area.

Which type of side-effects we can expect?

Inflammation may occur at the local areas, and in some cases minor infections can result despite the biological substance comes from the own body of the patient.
